600 km above the Earth in the space ship Explorer, Ryan Stone (Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D movie is full of fascinating images never before seen on the big screen, thanks to breathtaking digital simulation. The astronauts bounce around in space like yo-yo’s and it’s easy to empathize with their fear in open space. A scene in which Ryan finally reaches the ISS and removes her space suit to float weightlessly in the capsule like a fetus is magnificent. And the one in which she prepares to die, listening to the distant sounds coming from Earth is no less moving. Unfortunately the ending is unsurprising.
